In 2017, Matthew Schmid formed Type R Ministries (TRM) following his victorious journey to sustained recovery from addiction. Motivated by a profound empathy for others facing similar struggles, he embarked on a path of continuous learning and service. Attending a multitude of seminars, conventions, and workshops, Matthew earned his Peer Recovery Certification, furthering his commitment to aiding individuals in their recovery journeys. Subsequently, he pursued additional education, enrolling in courses to obtain his CDCA (Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistance licensure). Simultaneously, Matthew dedicated himself to establishing TRM as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity. Through meticulous planning, networking within the recovery community, and assembling a diverse board of directors, TRM swiftly garnered recognition and support. Within its initial 18 months, TRM secured substantial grants, including the 2018 Franklin County ADAMH Community Grant and the 2018 Morrow County United Way Grant, in addition to raising over $20,000 in donations.
TRM has always operated as a non-denominational ministry with a core mission of providing a “safe place for all people, helping inspire the faith to grow.” Initially, our focus was on establishing a nonprofit recovery organization tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, TRM flourished in this pursuit, forging partnerships with numerous regional recovery entities and facilitating the placement of hundreds of individuals into specialized recovery programs, notably catering to the unique cultural needs of queer individuals. From 2017 to 2019, TRM organized numerous in-person events, impacting thousands of individuals. Concurrently, TRM conducted extensive research on at-risk communities and collaborated with partner organizations to provide peer support and facilitate access to recovery services. Additionally, TRM actively participated in volunteer initiatives with Morrow County DAAP (The Morrow County Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition). However, recognizing the seismic shifts in the recovery landscape brought about by the pandemic, our board of directors recently redefined our vision to encompass a broader scope. Our renewed mission now aims to support individuals in rebuilding their lives after enduring various traumas, including those of a religious nature, acknowledging the often-overlooked challenges faced by many in this regard.
Since its inception in 2017, TRM has made a significant impact, touching the lives of thousands across diverse backgrounds. TRM has assisted over 200 individuals in accessing essential support by facilitating connections with recovery services. Additionally, TRM has provided peer support and fundamental addiction counseling to more than 500 people, with a commitment to expanding its reach further. Engaging in outreach initiatives since 2019, TRM has extended its mission beyond borders, participating in various missions in locations such as Ohio, New York City, and internationally in cities like Berlin, Germany, and Portugal.
Our Mission: Type R Ministries is a safe place for all people, helping to inspire the faith to grow.
